This page covers lore details about united society (also called reunited society) that are too detailed and/or specific to fit well on the main Setting page.
This lore is not strictly necessary for developing your characters or for a general understanding of united society, but you may make use of it if you wish.
Almost all residential buildings and many commercial buildings have spatial expansion magic, allowing for a practically unlimited number of residents space-wise, though there is some management on population.
There are a large number of conveniences, including time stasis "freezers," food delivery via teleportation, and permanent portals that lead from residences to major centers for public transport in various forms.
Almost all housing is state-owned, though requests can be put in to create buildings. Petitions for a building can be from an individual, group, or entity (like a company), and those with good reason are approved, though the state may counter-propose to expand the space of an existing building with spatial magic.
Voting is not compulsory, but everyone in the Registry is automatically registered and prompted to vote via Data's interface. There is an option for simplified voting preferences, where you input your general preferences and the items are automatically filled out, requiring only confirmation. This is done by Data based on guidelines from the United Council.
Prejudice is reduced thanks to exposure throughout life and education involving diversity training, communication, and more, but it is certainly still present. Some people have prejudices against magic and magical beings, some judge other by appearance, some have subconscious biases that affect them in subtle ways. Citizens can have whatever opinions they like, so long as this does not translate to crime. That said, major systemic issues, bullying, and things that affect the wellbeing of individuals will be addressed in various ways when discovered.
In the case of crime, rehabilitation is the most common response, followed by a combination of imprisonment and rehabilitation. The end goal is to guide individuals into being lawful citizens. Individuals have the option of accepting societal exile as punishment instead, though this also retracts the protection of united society from them.
Organizations:
Supergovernment and the United Council, outlining the structure of the governing body of united society.
Edeiology Research Association (ERA), an organization established as a way for mundane society to learn more about magic, now a nexus of collaboration between magical and mundane.
Ideation Academy, which organizes and provides accessible means of receiving education from Edeia and others.
Locations:
Vharmoné, a major city of united society.
Several forms of magitechnology have been developed through the intersection of both magical and mundane efforts for all sorts of purposes, from convenience and quality-of-life to life-changing health interventions.
Several forms of magitechnology draw on idea magic; some directly pull on the Edeia's power, though advancements in early Reunion have allowed the creation of self-sufficient magitechnology. However, the magical output of this self-sufficient magitechnology, sometimes referred to as ideatech or ideatechnology, is very limited compared to the powers of their source Edeia.
Though the process is quite complicated, put simply, ideatech essentially requires the construction of an simple programmed "artificial cognition" that is imbued with the Edeia's idea magic; the artificial cognition is then able to handle a limited degree of conversion of commands to magic outputs. The original programmed "cognition" is referred to as the Source. The "hardware" for the Source may be magical, physical, or a combination of both elements. Data holds most Sources within their Abstraction in the form of energy-based structures, but they particularly hold the Sources for any ideatech that the supergovernment is responsible for. There are backup physical sources that can be activated as contingencies, though these must each be infused by the donor Edeia; they cannot be duplicated on their own.
Once the Source is stable, creating duplicates is fairly straightforward, but any changes to the Source (the idea magic, how commands are processed into output, etc.) are reflected in all its duplicates. The Source is essentially a "base model" for any technology that employs it.
In the 2060s, Order helped the ERA develop much more efficient ideatech with the collaboration of Ki and Ro.
United society is powered by a mix of physical power (energy sources such as solar, geothermal, wind, etc.), "direct" ideatech (which requires no physical power), non-Idea-dependent magitech (sometimes referred to as "exotech"), and "Spirons." By modern day, physical power in major united society cities is completely phased out, but there are places that still use more traditional sources. Spirons and direct ideatech are generally referred to as using "imaginary energy," as it is an "energy" that is created through the conceptual power of Ideas.
Spirons, named after "inspiration," refer to various kinds of ideatech "batteries" that can replace any physical power source for any mundane technology and many power requirements for exotech. Multiple Sources exist for Spirons, though they are designed to function similarly. Different forms of Spirons (think AA vs. AAA batteries) have different outputs and limits, but general-use Spirons can generally last several decades, perhaps even a century. When they wear out, they can be turned over to the supergovernment to be recycled. They are used widely across united society and can work if brought beyond it, though they may not work if brought to another dimension.
Exotech refers to magitechnology that employs magic from beyond the Ideation universe or secondary effects of Idea magic that do not need to be created from scratch. Many forms of exotech, though not all, can be powered by Spirons. The engineering of this technology comes with its fair share of difficulties, but some focus their research on it specifically. The performance and stability of direct ideatech is generally much better than that of exotech, and is thus typically preferred in society.
In general, much of technology in united society relies on Spirons, though specialized magitechnology is generally ideatech that requires the correct Source from an Edeia with a suitable Idea and abilities.
Widely accessible magitechnology is available to all members of united society, but is often more utilized in more developed areas, such as major cities of united society. These technologies include but are not limited to:
All these interventions are optional but come at no cost to citizens of united society.
Lifespan extension, existing in its current form since 2040. Those who wish to extend their life can easily do so at no cost; this intervention extends lifespan to 2, sometimes 3 times the individual's original lifespan. Their aging is drastically slowed, perhaps at half their usual rate, and stops around their 60s to 80s when they appear to be in their 30s-40s.
Genetic disease and cancer elimination, present in early forms since 2030 and improved throughout the years, reaching its current state by around 2060. Early forms did not prevent illness but could eliminate it once developed; present forms can permanently prevent the occurrence of these diseases. Other non-infectious conditions such as allergies and autoimmune disorders can also be eliminated if they develop later in life.
Mundane contagious disease protection, present in early forms since 2025 and consistently updated as new pathogens are discovered. This essentially acts as a wide-ranging vaccination (and similarly provides long-term immunity as vaccines do).
Low-risk illnesses, such as common colds, are not usually covered in the protection so as to allow individuals to have the experience of handling illness should they ever leave united society. However, immunocompromised and other at-risk individuals can receive a more universal version.
Time stasis "freezers" that keep food in exactly the same state they were in when put in.
Teleportation of items for purposes such as package, mail, and food delivery.
Portals allowing instant travel between major areas, with other forms of public transport for more local travel.
Spatial inventories that allow carrying of many items with no weight or bulk.
Spatial expansion in buildings and other areas, allowing them to be larger within than from the outside, and for them to be expanded as needed.
Language translator, present in various forms. The most common form is ideatech that allows an individual to understand what is being said, what is written, or what is conveyed through other means. This information manifests mentally in their own language without modifying their perception; they still hear the same sounds, see the same texts, etc. It can be activated and deactivated at will. Each known language needs to be added to the Source, and it is updated as more languages are discovered, such as from external dimensions.
ImR, spoken as "immer," a magitechnology developed with some of Myris's magic in 2038. It is considered the next level of virtual reality, experienced with all senses and not requiring any heavy or complicated equipment—only a small ImR device that can fit in one's hand.
The Registry, established in 2030, is the official record of all individuals who interact with united society, including citizens and visitors.
All citizens must have a record in the Registry with some biographical information and, if relevant, any kind of magic or supernatural abilities they might have. For those born under normal circumstances in this world, the entry is made at birth and voluntarily updated (with periodic reminders to do so).
Those who briefly visit united society do not necessarily need to Register, but if they interact with any interfaces, they will be requested to do so. If they visit united society multiple times without Registering, Data will warn them that Registration is required, and if they do not make their own entry, a public entry will be created for them.
Edeia may choose whether or not to maintain an entry in the Registry if they already have one. Those who do not already have one can choose to make one. If they want to interact with society to a significant degree, such as being a resident, running or being part of a business, having a role as a leader, etc. they need to have an up-to-date entry.
Fusions may choose to register, and permafusions are strongly encouraged to do so. The entry will be attached to both components' entries.
Tuplet Edeia, Soultwined Edeia, and Fissions have singular entries with different sub-entries. Tuplet Edeia have a sub-entry for each individual and their fusion, and Fission Edeia have a sub-entry for their normal form and each fragment.
Those with a Registry entry can:
Update information such as their pictures, gender, pronouns, and magic information.
View others' public Registry entries.
Choose which parts of their Registry are visible to the public, if any. Edeia who register do not need to reveal their status as an Edeia to those who know them, in which case only Data and certain divisions of the supergovernment are privy to the information.
Create aliases of their Registry entry after the age of 18 by putting in a request through the Registry (via Data). These aliases can essentially function as different people from a legal standpoint in many ways, and can be presented as official documentation in many cases. However, employing aliases to break the law or commit fraud is a crime. Whether these aliases are publicly linked to the individual's main entry is up to them.
Vote in matters of united society. Voting is not compulsory, but people are automatically registered with their Registry and they are prompted to vote via Data's interface unless they specifically opt out.
There is an option for simplified voting preferences, where the individual inputs your general views and the items are automatically filled out automatically, only requiring confirmation. There is a team in united society that writes up guidelines for Data's process that are approved by the united council, though Data fine-tunes the answers based on individual views and preference.
Here is an HTML code template for a Registry entry, and here is a live example. The images on the left can generally be arranged into any collage desired and the distribution of space can be altered, though they should generally be fullbody images. You can adapt this code for your character's profile or use it as a representation of their in-universe Registry entry.
Edeia who hold a pivotal role in the operations of the supergovernment are bound by one or more magical contracts, which—due to the willing agreement involved—require them to complete certain conditions to either complete or break the contract. Order and Ruler are both involved in many of these contracts; even if either were to leave or dissociate, the magic would still be present. Through Order's power, contracts to the supergovernment become a sort of "social contract," where employees of the supergovernment fall under some effects, but proper agreement allows the contract to take full effect. While supergovernment employees are not required to agree to all magical contracts of the supergovernment, they are presented with the details for onboarding.
Data in particular is bound to ensure that, if they plan or know they are going to leave, the supergovernment would be able to continue operations without significant issues. Even if they decide they want to leave or feel dissociation approaching, they would not be able to remove themself from operations until there are proper systems in place. Order and Ruler are both involved in Data's contracts; even if either were to leave or dissociate, the magic would still be present.
The contract has many details, which include but are not limited to:
if Data wants to leave or is going to associate, the supergovernment cannot dissuade or purposefully block them, such as by avoiding building infrastructure to replace them.
Data cannot stop or dissuade the supergovernment from developing technology and other means that could replace them.
Data cannot purposefully hinder supergovernment operations (though some purposeful neglect is fine); this includes blocking access to Sources.
Data must follow certain guidelines on sharing and reporting of data, which allows them leeway to acquire information without it being the supergovernment's business.
In return for Data's cooperation, they essentially gain free reign over supergovernment data, the internet, and more. They have no reason to quit, as they quite enjoy being central to data in united society, though they have assisted the supergovernment with preparing redundancies to ease the worries of society. For instance:
There are backup Sources that are nearly functional—missing only a few pieces or processes for security—that can be activated to replace a deactivated Source (e.g. if Data decided to destroy the existing Sources).
Data storage and server centers are consistently being made and maintained with the help of ideatech made from Data themself, with the Source held by the supergovernment somewhere Data can't access.
Various supergovernment processes are automated or are built to be if needed.
Order also has a supergovernment contract, though the terms are not nearly as detailed or strict, as they are not central to operations like Data is.
Education in united society is free (unless private schooling is chosen) and generally compulsory for sapient beings starting from age six (or species-equivalent developmental stage), but there are exceptions and considerations for individuals with different needs and species with different ways of development and learning. Earlier schooling is possible, but optional. Rather than having a set age range, they must meet certain education requirements and complete certain evaluations (which can be standardized testing or personalized assessments constructed by Data) to finish basic education; some may be faster and some may be slower, and once they finish basic requirements, they can count their education as finished or proceed to higher education.
Basic curriculum includes many of the basic knowledge and skills taught in schools today along with diversity training, communication skills, emotional processing, life sciences about non-human species, and basic magic literacy.
There are options for both public and private schooling, but in general, they must be certified by an education board according to supergovernment-set standards (including a basic curriculum) in order to qualify as proper education. Potential options include:
private schools, which may focus on specialties or work with a certain demographic.
public local schools, set up by local government. These may resemble the schools we know today.
public supergovernment-established schools. These likely employ the latest learning and education techniques and technologies, and generally feel more "futuristic."
homeschooling.
Ideation Academy.
If a student is not receiving qualified education, they may be flagged by Data or other means.
If the issue is the parent(s) withholding education or not providing sufficient education, the parent will be contacted and advised to send their child to qualified education, offering various options and means. If the parent still does not provide the education, they may be charged with withholding education, and the child may be brought to a relative or foster who will ensure they can receive their education.
If the issue is with a school/institution, local government or supergovernment officials will come to review requirements and necessary change for reforming the school.
If the issue is with a particular teacher, whether for homeschooling or in a school, the teacher may receive a warning and suggestion to review requirements. If they persist, their license may be suspended, and they may need to re-certify.
Most schools have some kind of organization that focuses on communication between parents, caregivers, and teachers. If there is no organization, there still must be some system in place for communication. By 2030, in public schools, these organizations receive sufficient government funds to handle all necessities of operation along with some funds for fun activities and events, though donations are still welcome within reason, and parents/caregivers can organize events as part of the organization with their own resources if they wish.
Higher education includes mundane institutions that have continued from pre-Reunion, new institutions formed in united society, and Ideation Academy. Institutions may be public and free or private with a tuition cost. Mundane institutions and some new institutions may award degrees (bachelors, Ph.D., etc.), while Ideation Academy and supergovernment-established institutions tend to keep a live record of specializations (Sp) and aptitudes (Ap). Specializations tend to be more knowledge-based, while aptitudes tend to be more skill-based. If one wishes to use a title (such as Doctor for Ph.D.s), they may choose Specialist and/or Adept, e.g. potentially written as Sp. Doe for a John Doe.
There are overarching laws in united society, which include but are not limited to required education, no significant harm or influence without informed consent, having a Registry entry, and being subject to united society enforcement. Local governments within united society may have their police/enforcement and their own policies and laws, which cannot oppose united society overarching laws, but can be more specific.
Supergovernment laws address anything that causes distress, disorder, loss of agency/free will/ability to make your own decisions, destruction, etc. on a decently large scale as to affect a group of people, a city/town, all of society, etc. typically related to magic/Edeia, as the mundane side of society has other methods of enforcement as well.
Interpersonal issues are not something they address; they will not interfere with unhealthy relationships, and they will not stop relationships and fusions that may pose a risk to society. Other individuals and Edeia may attempt to address interpersonal issues separately from supergovernment laws, however. If there is an Edeia, fusion, or other individual that poses a risk to society, Data will monitor them so long as they are interacting with united society, but as long as they behave, no other action will be taken. If they have repeat offenses (successful or not, since Data may act quickly) and show no signs of stopping, then the process will be as described in the "supergovernment enforcement" section below. Societal exile is more common for non-Edeia and fusions.
When crime and misdemeanors occur in society, rehabilitation is the most common response, followed by a combination of imprisonment and rehabilitation. The end goal is to guide individuals into being lawful citizens. Individuals have the option of accepting societal exile as punishment instead, though this also retracts the protection of united society from them.
Generally, enforcement differs depending on whether the individuals involved are magical or not, and if the crime/misdemeanor is magical or not.
If a mundane individual commits a mundane crime/misdemeanor, local police, which may involve both magical and mundane members, may handle the situation with their own specific policies and laws. The punishment is typically mundane.
If a magical individual commits a mundane crime/misdemeanor, magical members of local police may handle the situation. The punishment is typically mundane.
If a magical individual commits a magical crime/misdemeanor, depending on the scale and severity of the crime, magical members of local police or supergovernment enforcement may be involved. The punishment is typically magical.
If an Edeia commits a crime/misdemeanor, supergovernment enforcement is likely to get involved. The punishment is typically magical, though they are able to fine Edeia if they participate in the economy.
Generally, action or clear and reasonable evidence for premeditation and intention for crime is needed for intervention. Simply expressing desires for violence or hateful language is not generally basis for the intervention of enforcement. However, expressing prejudicial and hateful language or acts in ways that cause mental and emotional harm to others can still be basis for intervention. Data is often the first to know about these cases, and may inform local police or supergovernment enforcement if necessary to prevent or stop real harm from occurring. How much monitoring and reporting Data should do is often debated in the United Council.
Supergovernment enforcement involves a individuals (who may be volunteers or paid employees of the supergovernment). Their roles broadly encompass capturing criminals, gathering evidence and delivering sentences, assisting with rehabilitation, and more, though each individual tends to specialize in a particular area. Generally, these individuals are referred to as enforcers. All enforcers carry a fragment of Data with them. Some may wander and live as they please day to day, only being involved when called upon. Others may be more involved, such as helping with interrogation, rehabilitation, evidence gathering, and other roles that require more long-term commitment. Data tends to handle most if not all of the administrative work.
If an Edeia or other powerful magical being is causing chaos in united society, Data will generally be the first to know, and the information will be reported to one or more members of secrecy enforcement, typically another Edeia. The enforcer may be asked to give a warning to the offending individual.
On the second offense, for an Edeia, Order may personally appear to judge the situation and give one more warning. You may mention this in your backstory without asking Auspice so long as there are no unexpected interactions, but you may consult for accuracy if you wish. Non-Edeia will often be warned by other enforcers.
If there is a third offense, Order may call a convergence of enforcers to make a judgement; any Edeia may attend, though Order, Data, Saturne, and Pacific show up to most. The attending will decide on a suitable punishment—this typically involves deciding on the length of time for Abstraction containment (also called Abstraction jail), and then seeing if there are any Edeia who will volunteer to attempt to rehabilitate the individual. Rehabilitation will usually start within the contained Edeia's Abstraction, but if they finish serving their time or by the preference/decision of the rehabilitator or the convergence, sessions may occur in the rehabilitator's Abstraction. Order is able to "lock" an individual in the rehabilitator's Abstraction for set amounts of time, after which the offending Edeia is sent back to their own Abstraction
Sometimes, the punishment may be societal exile, in which they are forcefully teleported outside of the borders of civilization every time they appear. This is done with somewhat automated magitechnology, though Data monitors it. They may appeal their exile through an upstanding participant in society vouching for them in a convergence involving Order or at least one closely associated with them, and volunteering to escort them in society for a time. If the exiled individual demonstrates improved behavior, the exile may be lifted. Though Data will still be watching.
You may mention this sort of judgement convergence in your backstory/history without consulting Auspice, whether as the subject or an attendee, but if you want to have more details with Auspice's personal characters, you must ask.
The types of offenses they address are only in those in context with the united civilization, which includes all mundane humans living as part of society and magical individuals who choose to join it.
Edeia have always been capable of traveling in space, but to keep things simple and straightforward, there is no other life in space. There are no aliens from other planets in the world of Ideation, but extradimensional aliens may be present.
By 2060, there is a United Space Exploration Association, or USEA, that is the center of efforts to explore space, allowing humans and other beings to wander the stars. National space programs were absorbed into USEA, though some still consider themselves part of a subgroup. This is a relatively small part of the lore as most important things occur on Earth, but this information is here if you want it.
USEA and those part of it build advanced spacecraft to explore the vast reaches of space. These spacecrafts can be fairly small or very large, and are capable of faster-than-light speed and instantaneous communication using magitechnology.
Most of space exploration involves researching the characteristics of other objects in space, such as planets, moons, stars, asteroids, etc. It is largely an academic/scientific venture, one to discover the curiosities of space. There are restrictions on building structures, as well; generally, the spacecraft is sufficient to act as a mobile base. Temporary and mobile pods are often used, and orbital bases are sometimes built.
Edeia may sometimes build metaphysical structures in space, which is generally acceptable so long as it is not a physical structure that disturbs the integrity of nature. While it is possible that anyone could build whatever they want, I personally have complicated feelings about colonizing space, terraforming, etc. and it could complicate the world of Ideation. Space was not intended to be a major part of the lore, but again, this information is here if you want it.
By 2030, united society established a new foster care system incorporating both mortals and Edeia. Children who are orphaned, come from circumstances that make return to family difficult, or otherwise lack a support system in united society will be identified and brought into the UFS, the United Foster System. They are initially brought to supergovernment facilities handled by social workers; these facilities do have everything they need but can be a rather impersonal compared to a family.
Mortal families are the first line for fostering mortal children, but standards are much more strict and once a child is placed, they generally remain with that family. However, this can make finding a good match difficult. Children seeking a non-government environment may choose to move to licensed facilities that apply to UFS to help raise and support the children, even if they are not a formal foster family.
Some foster children are part of UFS temporarily if reunification with biological family is safe, possible, and suitable. Adoption is an option otherwise, but long-term or permanent fostering without legal adoption is perfectly acceptable. The children have a say in where they go, and there are ways of evaluating their understanding of the situation.
"Aging out" is no longer an issue due to resource abundance in Reunion. Support continues as long as needed to help the child become independent, including education, housing, healthcare, life skills, therapy, and more. Even after becoming independent, they can maintain contact with their social worker and support services, and may still be considered the "foster child" of their foster parent, even if not adopted.
Foster parents and foster children both have a nanoData for check-ins and basic monitoring of things such as health and general wellbeing. Data is not always watching, though. Data sometimes does the check-ins themself, though if a social worker is handling the specific case, they simply act as the medium for contact.
Edeia can apply for fostering; they do so through Data, and after initial approval and background check, they go through an interview by Truth or another Edeia with similar abilities of discernment. (There are occasions that Data asks Truth to interview those rejected in the initial review for Data's entertainment, if Truth has time.)
Foster applications cover details such as past interactions with children and other mortals, documented incidents in society, stability and availability, and resources. Interviews focus on areas such as appropriate motives, understanding of mortality, and plans for healthcare and socialization in society.
Edeia can apply for prioritization in certain cases if they demonstrate competence in handling them, such as children with trauma, health issues, behavioral problems, certain social needs, etc.
You are welcome to involve your Edeia in UFC without Auspice's approval, but they should be suitable for the role, and if you want to discuss dialogue in an interview with Truth, please consult Auspice. Here are some questions you can consider to determine whether or not your Edeia is suitable:
Is your Edeia emotionally, temporally, and physically available to care for a mortal child?
Does your Edeia have the proper resources to care for a mortal child?
Does your Edeia understand the physical, emotional, and social needs of children, including their individuality and autonomy, and can they provide for these needs?
Do they have genuinely benevolent motives to nurture them into independent, well-functioning, physically and mentally healthy members of society?
Do they understand the ways they may need to restrain their behaviors and abilities around them to avoid imposing their ideology, overwhelming the child with their presence/power, or unduly influencing the child's development and choices?
Do they understand and can they handle the loss that can come with their mortal children passing away, without pressuring them to undergo transformations and other processes to extend their life or otherwise treating mortality as something to be 'fixed'?
Does your Edeia have a plan to ensure the child has regular contact with other mortals (peers, mentors, community) and won't become isolated or solely dependent on the Edeia?
Can your Edeia handle the child saying 'no' to them, disagreeing with them, or wanting to leave their care? Can they respect the child's agency even when they believe they know better?
Are there aspects of your Edeia's Idea, abilities, or lifestyle that could be harmful or inappropriate for children? Do they have a plan for how to mitigate these?
If your Edeia is well-known or famous, can they provide a stable, private environment for the child and protect them from unwanted public attention?
Note: one option is for Edeia to keep their identity obscured in the child's social circle, such as by shapeshifting into a mundane identity, though relevant authority figures such as teachers must be informed.
There are more considerations, but this is a good place to start. Note that this is only about those involved in UFC, who may be contacted about children needing foster care; Edeia may raise children on their own separately from the system.
In an age of mixing magic and mundane, new service platforms have formed to meet new kinds of interests and needs. Many of these platforms involve more than just united society, but are generally most known and used in united society.
These platforms include but are not limited to:
Conceptuality, a hybrid digital library and creator platform that serves as a hub for Edeia-related knowledge and information. Established in 2016 by Akasha and Data.
EtheReal, a relationship discovery platform specifically designed for Edeia-to-Edeia connections. Established in 2033 through a collaborative effort involving Prágma, Allegro, and Data, during a time of many Edeia settling into lives of "normalcy" in united society.
IDEALIST, a high-end matchmaking service that connects Edeia with clients seeking personalized, unique experiences that Edeia can offer. Established in 2025, and by 2035, it is fairly well-known as a reputable platform in united society, with many citizens trying something on it at least once.
IdealVision, a subscription-based platform that allows viewers to experience Edeia content remotely through specialized magitechnology.
See this document for details on these platforms. Note that there are two tabs, one for general audience platforms and one for adult audience platforms.
United society maintains regulations on pet ownership and trade to ensure the welfare of animals and other non-sapient creatures while keeping these practices accessible to those interested.
Synthetic pets are highly popular by present day, though traditional pet keeping remains a popular pursuit among those passionate about animal care and husbandry, coexisting with synthetic alternatives. The overall trend is toward greater diversity of options and higher welfare standards. Some practices common in the pre-Reunion era—such as breeding animals with health-compromising traits or keeping species in conditions unsuitable for their needs—have largely been phased out.
Pet enthusiasts often maintain detailed knowledge of their chosen species and may participate in communities focused on animal welfare, behavior research, or conservation efforts. Some Edeia maintain populations of particular species within their Abstractions or create new species (often through transformation), which may later become available in united society under appropriate regulations.
Living beings that have been clearly demonstrated to lack sentience, such as plants and simple organisms, can be owned and traded without significant regulation. However, creatures with complex behaviors, social structures, or nervous systems fall under welfare regulations administered by the supergovernment.
The regulatory requirements scale with the complexity and needs of the species:
Simple domesticated animals (such as many cats, dogs, and common small pets) require completion of a basic education course on care and welfare, typically completed through Data's interface. These courses cover species-specific needs, health signs, and ethical treatment standards.
Species with specialized environmental, social, or dietary needs require additional certifications demonstrating knowledge of their specific requirements, humane acquisition methods, and appropriate habitat provision. This includes many exotic species, highly social animals, and those with complex care needs.
Species from other dimensions or created through magic may have additional requirements depending on their characteristics and potential impacts.
Regulations explicitly distinguish between non-sapient creatures (which may be kept as pets under appropriate welfare standards) and sapient beings (who have full rights and cannot be owned). Any creature demonstrating clear sapience—the capacity for self-awareness, abstract reasoning, complex communication, and understanding of consent—is recognized as a person under united society law, regardless of species or origin. Data monitors for cases where beings previously thought non-sapient demonstrate sapience, and adjustments are made accordingly.
Individuals and organizations involved in breeding or trading creatures must meet qualification standards and maintain documentation of their practices. Acquisition methods must be consciable and, for wild-caught species, sustainable and non-detrimental to wild populations. Regulations and guidelines address ecological risks through magitechnological means such as tracking systems for pets and offspring, containment measures to prevent escape into local ecosystems, and population monitoring. Species populations are managed according to factors including location, risk to the local ecosystem, reproductive rates, and existing populations.
In practice, meeting these standards is straightforward in modern united society—a post-scarcity society with abundant resources and advanced magitechnology. Appropriate habitats can be created through spatial expansion magic, specialized care equipment is readily available, and education is accessible to all.
Synthetic companions are widely popular in united society, offering companionship without the ethical considerations of keeping living creatures. These include but are not limited to:
robotic toys
software agents
magitechnological constructs
magical constructs directly created and offered by Edeia
Their complexity can range from simple to highly sophisticated with complex behavioral programming. Some are powered by ideatech, allowing for remarkably advanced behaviors and interactions.
Synthetic pets are particularly common among those with space constraints, allergies, or interest in fantastical creatures that don't exist naturally. They can also serve as a way for individuals to experience pet ownership before committing to the care of a living animal.
